Mccall's Make me wana Holler Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Mccall's Make me wana Holler - Essay Example The narrator of McCall’s book undergoes a transformation of literacy when he becomes familiar with historical black authors while in prison, and changes his life to meet new goals in forming his life as an author. This is a book that deals deeply with three main themes: double standards (whites/blacks), internalized oppression vs. institutional discrimination (racism and classism are against McCall in the narrative), and labeling (because of his race and where he is from, the narrator is labeled as a deviant, and therefore perpetrates deviant behavior expected of him). Looking at these themes, one can also see how the work relates to socio economics and education. The author McCall doesn’t get much from the educational system in his area. Instead, he learns through his peers. And in a world of oppression where young black males like McCall are often driven from conventional modes of opportunity and access to productive careers and college, McCall instead fell in with his peers, in an unstructured environment. â€Å"By the time I reached the 7th grade, Id learned that a dude s life had no meaning unless he hung with someone. I discovered the strength and solace in camaraderie. It was a confidence booster, a steady support for my fragile self-esteem† (McCall, 22). At this point, the narrator feels that society has already excluded him from the mainstream because he is African American, and so it makes him insecure and drives him to these bonds leading to heightened courage and anti-social behavior in McCall’s teen group. This is also related to education, as it has been found that white and Asian students tend to do better than African-American or Latino students or students in low socio economic areas (Singham, 2003). This is perhaps a reflection of a larger problem of opportunity, access, and structural inequality, which is also shown in McCall’s thought provoking work. McCall’s story also addresses the problem of

Better Find Your Loving Essay -- Literary Analysis, Allen, Gilman, Ste

Better Find Your Loving Restraints are set by parents on their children to aid with the developmental process and help with the maturity level. Restrictions and the ability to control are present in our society and our lives. We encounter restraints daily: job, doors, people, and the most frequently used and arduous become intangible. In the following stories we are seen both the tangible and intangible scenarios. The Autonomy, desires and talents spurned by the husbands in John Steinbeck’s â€Å"The Chrysanthemums and Charlotte Gilman’s â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper.† The authors are of opposite sexes who share views regarding a similar theme of male domination and imprisonment. â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† involves the treatment of a depressed woman who is driven insane in a male imposed detention of her own room. On the other hand, Elisa Allen in the â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† struggles internally to find her place in a male dominated society or definite gender roles. The m irror-like situations bring upon a different reaction for both the women in different ways. The importance of symbolism, control from their husbands, and the lack of a healthy marriage will be discussed in this paper on the two different stories written by authors of different sexes. Elisa Allen and the narrator of â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† are both trapped in various ways and their sexuality of a woman leads to this entrapment. Elisa feels confined and limited, â€Å"the high grey-flannel fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and from all the rest of the world† (226). She feels trapped from the outside world that feels emotionally and spiritually inhibited. The chrysanthemums symbolize her scope of life to which she spends extra time to care off. The chrysanthemums st... ...wer that leads to lack of understanding in their marriage. The wallpaper symbolizes the trapped narrator and the strucure of the tradition. Also, Elisa’s chrysanthemums are rejected which portray the rejection of women and nothing important as housewives can be applied with the narrator. Elisa ends up â€Å"crying weakly like an old woman† and settles in for wine (233). Whereas, the narrator actions leads to the husband â€Å"fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time† (447). The narrator is insane and causes faintness in her husband, hoping that she now has an escape. To conclude, John Steinbecks â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† and Charloette Perkins â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† show two different outcomes mainly arisen due to being trapped inside an isolated house or a garden and having a limited life under a husband's control.

Are Gendered Etiquette rules Implicitly Sexual? Essay

In every culture, there exists ways through which different genders relate with each other. Both the sexes adopt a given mode of behavior which is normally characterized by chastity, modesty and all the noble train of virtues which are essential in dating. In particular, the men are required to be at the forefront in initiating a courteous gesture towards the women. However, this natural human behavior have evolved throughout the centuries and today with the acceptance of same sex relationships, some of its universal character has been lost. Among the men, there is marked difference between the heterosexuals and homosexuals with regard to etiquette. This could be as a result of how these two different groups perceive females. However, certain practices have stuck in various cultures even though the purpose have been lost. For instance, several cultures encourage certain practices towards women like holding the chair, opening the door and general positive gesture towards women. (Reskin, 1998 p. 64) It has often been claimed that etiquette results in men and women adopting an artificial mode of behavior because of this supposed necessity. In the present transgender and same sex marriage world, one may be interested in finding the relevance of certain etiquettes. Among the heterosexual and homosexual males, there exists differences in perception with regard to etiquette. While to the heterosexuals, a woman may seem worthy of some special treatment because of the natural attraction or the natural feelings that he has towards her, the homosexual translates this feeling to their male counterparts. As a show of regard and appreciation for the woman, heterosexual man may hold a chair, open the car door or address her in a manner which is likely to show approval and importance. This action of heterosexual man towards a woman in most cases is conditioned by the desire or need to gain recognition as a potential boyfriend or acquaintance. In contrast, a homosexual man may exhibit the same action towards a woman as a custom or as a mode of accepted practice towards women. (Snipes, 2007 p. 23) This action to open the car’s door has nothing to do with his desire to gain any form of recognition by the woman but rather, he might feel bound by culture to do this. For instance, it may be part of his culture to open the door for women of females in this case. In other words a â€Å"straight man† may be driven by some personal goals while the homosexual may do it as the natural and normal thing to do. If a natural order in the socializing influence to the code of etiquette is to be adopted, then there will be a distinct difference between the heterosexuals and the homosexuals. If not for culture, a homosexual man may not see any special reason to open the car’s door for a lady. Even if he does, his action will not be driven by any clear sexual motive. Heterosexual men are more sensitive when handling females than their homosexual counterparts. They are greatly concerned about how the females will regard their actions and behavior and hence are more cautious when dealing with them. Homosexuals on the other hand are insensitive to the females’ thoughts about them. However, they may show some form of interest in the ladies as much as this would further their aim of acquiring a new partner should this happen to be the lady’s friend. Still, this interest is not entirely directed to the lady but rather her acquaintance. With this regard, it may not be very clear if gendered etiquette are implicitly sexual since through the centuries, the human society has evolved so much and new ways of relationships have developed while some of the old ways have become irrelevant to the present society. However, there are certain modes of gender relationships that are regarded natural. Males and females have a unique way of relating with each other whether â€Å"gay† or â€Å"straight†. How to Change a Flat Tire

You can easily get sucker into paying more than fifty dollars for having a towing company change flat tire for you. Instead, you can save yourself money by doing it yourself. It is a simple process that takes less than half an hour. Most of the tools you need are already in your car. These tools include a Jack, a tire iron, a spare tire, and road flares. The first step is to set up the road flares. Flares are available at most department stores and are a very good idea to carry. Setting flares makes the car more visible, decreasing the chance of an accident while you are changing the tire. To properly set flares, you should have four of them. Take each flare and light it, following the directions on the package. After you light them, lay them on the ground in the following pattern. Lay the first one about fifty feet behind your car, and about four feet from the white line on the side of the road. Set the rest of the flares in a straight line, with the last one being about three feet from the driver’s side rear corner of your car on the white line. This will allow other drivers to see that there is an emergency, and allow them time to merge. The next step is to begin the tire change. To do this you must take the rest of the tools out of your car. The tire iron is probably in the trunk along with the spare tire. The car jack might be in the trunk, or it might be under the hood next to the engine. It depends on what type of car you have. Once you have all of the tools out, find the tire iron. The tire iron in most vehicles is a bent piece of steel flattened on one end, with a socket on the other. Use the flattened end to pry off the hubcap. Then use the socket to loosen all five lug nuts. Do not remove the lug nuts at this time because it will cause the car to fall. Once you loosen the lug nuts, you will begin lifting the car with the jack. There are only four places on the car where you can put the jack. They are close to the tires, and reinforced to hold the weight of the car. There are pictures and written directions on the side of the jack, telling you where to use it. Find the spot where the jack goes, and determine if the ground will support the weight of your car. If it might not, you will want to stick a board, or another hard object under the jack. This will allow you to jack up the car, even in the softest ground. Once the tire is off the ground about four to five inches, remove the lug nuts, and take the tire off. Take your spare tire, line it up with the lug bolts, and slip it on. Put all five lug nuts back on and tighten them as much as possible. It is easier to put the top ones on first, because this will keep the ire from falling off. Lower the car back to the ground, and remove the jack. Tighten the lug nuts as tight as possible. There is a special way to tighten the lug nuts, if you do not do it this way, your tire may be on the hub crooked. After tightening one lug, go directly across to tighten the next one, be sure to re-tighten all of the lug nuts at least four times. This will make your tire go on the hub perfectly straight. Then, put all of the tools away, and put your flat tire in the trunk. Before you go, read the spare tire to see if there is any speed limitations. Some car manufacturers design their spares to travel only at slow speeds. Check your tire for any specific regulations. If you do not abide by speed limitations, the tire could blow out, causing not only damage to the rim, but also possibly body damage to the car. How to Change a Flat Tire Donna Pierce ENG032 G02 02-21-2013 Illustration Essay First Draft Going back to College As a college student, all my fellow students are worried about what they will do for spring break. I, on the other hand, am trying to figure out what to do with my grandchildren. I have been out of school for 28 years. Being back in college is exciting, but it can also be very stressful too. So many things have changed since I was in school. For instance, the subjects are a lot harder than 28 years ago.For example, the math classes with algebra are nothing like the algebra that I learned back in the day. Also, all of our homework has to be done online. We didn’t really use the internet back then. Furthermore, it’s really nice getting to meet new friends that are my age and older. For instance, we all get together and have study groups to try to help each other out. To sum it up, going back to college at an older age has its advantages and disadvantages. The subjects are different to s ome extent, but I just have to work that much harder to understand and learn the internet better. It’s really nice having friends that you can get together with as a study group to help each other understand and try to accomplish our goals. I feel that going back to school will help me learn that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you still can accomplish your goals in life if you put forth the effort.

Downloading Programs and Software essays Although economist Milton Friedman once proclaimed that "There's no such thing as a free lunch," that doesn't necessarily hold true for software. There are some totally free programsquite a number, in factthat come without so much as an advertiser's banner across the top as a form of payment." (Some freeware' is free to the user, but not to the advertiser, and those do carry banners, or even spyware, which reports your Internet efforts in aid of market research.) Websense Inc. reported in 2002 that the number of freeware and shareware sites on the Web had spiked 315 percent in the previous year to a total of more than 4,300 Web sites and a total of almost 1.3 million Web pages. Freeware sites distribute free software the user can download; shareware sites offer software on a free trial basis and usually including an expiration date, which is tracked. (Business Wire, 2002) Popular systems such as the Linux operating system are subject to massive independent peer review, so bugs in any freeware or shareware for the most common systems is readily found. Freeware and software are also two-way streets; hackers who add enhancements because of the source code license being free return those enhancements so the original developer can redistribute the software including those enhancements. When Netscape released the sourcecode for its browser, enhancements happened quickly and globally. "Within seven hours of releasing the source code of its browser, which did not include full-strength encryption, a group in Australia built in the full-strength encryption that Netscape could not distribute because of U.S. export laws," according to an InfoWorld report. The Roman King L. Tarquinius Priscus According to Livy

The Roman King L. Tarquinius Priscus According to Livy Like the reigns of the kings of Rome who preceded L. Tarquinius Priscus (Romulus, Numa Pompilius, Tullius Ostilius, and Ancus Marcius), and those who followed him (Servius Tullius, and L. Tarquinius Superbus), the reign of the Roman King L. Tarquinius Priscus is shrouded in legend. The Story of Tarquinius Priscus According to Livy An Ambitious CoupleProud Tanaquil, born to one of the foremost  Etruscan families in Tarquinii (an Etrurian city northwest of Rome) was unhappy with her rich husband, Lucumo not with her husband as a man, but with his social status. On his mothers side, Lucumo was Etruscan, but he was also the son of a foreigner, a Corinthian noble and refugee named Demaratus. Lucumo agreed with Tanaquil that their social status would be enhanced if they moved to a new city, like Rome, where social status wasnt yet measured by genealogy. Their plans for the future seemed to have divine blessing or so thought Tanaquil, a woman trained in at least rudimentary arts of Etruscan divination,* for she interpreted the omen of an eagle swooping down to place a cap on Lucumos head as the gods selection of her husband as a king. Upon entering the city of Rome, Lucumo took the name of Lucius Tarquinius Priscus. His wealth and behavior won Tarquin important friends, including the king, Ancus, who, in his will, appointed Tarquin guardian of his children. Ancus ruled for twenty-four years, during which time his sons almost grew up. After Ancus died, Tarquin, acting as a guardian, sent the boys on a hunting trip, leaving him free to canvass for votes. Successful, Tarquin persuaded the people of Rome that he was the best choice for king. * According to Iain McDougall, this is the only truly Etruscan trait Livy mentions in connection with Tanaquil. Divination was a mans occupation, but women could have learned certain common basic signs. Tanaquil may otherwise be viewed as a woman of the Augustan age. The Legacy of L. Tarquinius Priscus - Part ITo garner political support, Tarquin created 100 new senators. Then he waged war against the Latins. He took their town of Apiolae and, in honor of the victory, started the Ludi Romani (Roman Games), which consisted of boxing and horse racing. Tarquin marked out for the Games the spot that became the Circus Maximus. He also established viewing spots, or fori (forum), for the patricians and knights. ExpansionThe Sabines soon attacked Rome. The first battle ended in a draw, but after Tarquin increased the Roman cavalry he defeated the Sabines and forced an unequivocal surrender of Collatia. The king asked, Have you been sent as envoys and commissioners by the people of Collatia to make the surrender of yourselves and the people of Collatia? We have. And is the people of Collatia an independent people? It is. Do you surrender into my power and that of the People of Rome yourselves, and the people of Collatia, your city, lands, water, boundaries, temples, sacred vessels all things divine and human? We do surrender them. Then I accept them.Livy Book I Chapter: 38 Soon he set his sights on Latium. One by one, the towns capitulated. The Legacy of L. Tarquinius Priscus - Part IIEven before the Sabine War, he had started to fortify Rome with a stone wall, Now that he was at peace he continued. In areas where water couldnt drain he built drainage systems to empty into the Tiber. Son-in-lawTanaquil interpreted another omen for her husband. A boy who may have been a slave was sleeping when flames surrounded his head. Instead of dousing him with water, she insisted he be left untouched until he woke of his own accord. When he did, the flames disappeared. Tanaquil told her husband that the boy, Servius Tullius would be a light to us in trouble and perplexity, and a protection to our tottering house. From then on, Servius was raised as their own and in time was given Tarquins daughter as wife a sure sign that he was the preferred successor. This angered the sons of Ancus. They figured the odds of their winning the throne were greater if Tarquin were dead than Servius, so they devised and carried out Tarquins assassination. With Tarquin dead from an ax through the head, Tanaquil devised a plan. She would deny to the public that her husband was mortally wounded while Servius would carry on as the king pro-temp, pretending to consult with Tarquin on various issues. This plan worked for a while. In time, word spread of Tarquins death. However, by this time Servius was already in control. Servius was the first king of Rome who was not elected. Attitude Theories Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Attitude Theories - Essay Example 22). Katz emphasizes that when attitude is spoken out in the form of words, it becomes an opinion, which may not always be interpreted in the true spirit because the second person can not see the fundamental attitude that caused the opinion. For example, if someone says, â€Å"You look healthier than before†. We might not understand if he means to appreciate the other person’s health or just make him conscious by calling him fat. Kelman, on the other hand, speaks about opinion change which indirectly causes a modification of the original attitude. Kelman explains the phenomenon of opinion change with respect to three qualitative variables which are compliance, internalization and identification which are essentially a means of social influence on the attitude of the individual. Katz has adopted a functional approach towards the definition of attitude in contrast to Kelman, who has explained how social influence can induce changes in the behavioral constructs of people. Katz has identified two ways in which attitude functions to cause human reaction to the surroundings – a rational attitude that induces optimism in human approach towards the analysis of and reaction to the matters and an irrational attitude that misleads people and causes them to respond irrationally landing them in trouble. â€Å"The functions are those of adjustment, egodefense, value expression and knowledge.† (Fones, p. 23). On the other hand, the â€Å"compliance† referred to by Kelman is essentially an acceptance of the propositions of others in a hope to achieve a certain expected outcome. â€Å"Identification† means the modification of attitude in an attempt to make it compatible with that of the group to gain a sense of identity and affiliation with that group. â€Å"Internalization causes people to accept other’s opinion because they feel that the proposed opinions reaffirm their basic thoughts and values. Both Katz and Kelman have been quite
